some things // 10 things to make your day better

Some things:
You are worthy of happiness. Don't give someone else the power to ruin your day.
And:
Believe this. Believe that you are important, and let that be enough of a reason to do good for yourself.

and, 10 things to make your day a little better! Yay:

(Disclaimer: these are things that have often worked for me. So while I make no guarantees, I hope that they might work for you!)

1. Drink coffee. Or tea. Or a frappucino or a milk shake or a glass of water. This morning I made french press coffee and it was this super brief moment where I was focused on making something good to enjoy and wasn't focused on anything else. Then I drank it and it was great. I'm a firm believer in "treat yo-self" when it comes to coffee. So hey, spend $5 on something good, if you need it (or make it- that's good too)

2. The San Diego Zoo has live camera feeds for their bigger animals. Take a couple minutes to hang out with some panda bears or polar bears of elephants!  (http://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/panda-cam or http://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/polar-cam)

3. Listen to your favorite song a couple of times. (Current faves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHeK0Cwr9sg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzbnMhSRejM, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxTH8GZ4PC4) ...OR put on a good record. If you have a record player. But spotify is good too.

4. Light a candle that smells good, or that will sooth you. This is pretty simple, but sometimes that's all you need. (My faves are Lavender Vanilla by Bath and Body Works, or Ocean Tide and Sea Salt by Paddywax)

5. Create something. I find that putting my focus into making something takes my attention away from things that are worrying me or causing anxiety. Paint, draw, write, photograph, cook...pick something that will focus all of your attention and energy into the creation of something new or good or beautiful.

6. Watch something that will make you laugh. Maybe it's Friends, or Family Guy, or Portlandia, or a video of someone making tiny pancakes. And I mean, you don't want to just drown yourself in Netflix and ignore your problems (although...guilty...) but if you're having a bad day, laughing at something totally unrelated to your life can feel so good.

7. Take a couple of deep breaths. Preferably outside. Preferably in fresh air. (Cry if you need to. Crying is TOTALLY ok)

8. Delete social media apps from your phone, or put your phone on airplane mode for a while. Personally, social media can be stressful. Particularly if you've posted something and are constantly wondering if someone liked or commented on it. Or in a different way, social media apps often induce a more severe sense of FOMO (fear of missing out). So just delete them. Or, if you don't want to be that extreme, just turn your phone on airplane mode while you're getting ready in the morning, making dinner, or driving to school. It's completely fine, and you probably aren't missing much anyways.

9. Do something cosmetically good for yourself. I like to paint my nails every couple of days, which is ridiculous, but whatever. You could just wash your face, or put on a fun lip color, or stand in the shower for a few more minutes. I think feeling better physically helps you feel better internally or emotionally.

10. Be thankful. Make a list, meditate on it, think of things, whatever you want to do. But if you're stuck in a bad day, it can be so helpful and freeing to consider and even list out everything you are thankful for. I usually end up thinking of things I never think of otherwise, and it's humbling. When you have an actual list of things you are appreciative of, bad days sometimes seem much less bad.

Thanks for listening/reading!
